Quilting

Would you like to learn quilting or try your first quilting project? With a little knowledge, the right materials, and patience, you can achieve impressive results at home on your regular sewing machine.

You can find more detailed information about quilting and patchwork on my blog.

First basics

Quilting or patchwork.

What is quilting – and how does it differ from patchwork?

Patchwork and quilting are closely related, but not the same. Patchwork describes the sewing together of many small pieces of fabric to create a large, patterned whole – the so-called quilt top. The focus here is on design: colors, shapes, and patterns are harmoniously combined.

Quilting, on the other hand, is the next step: The finished quilt top is sewn together with a batting and a backing. The quilting stitches, which connect all three layers, give the piece its characteristic structure and stability. The stitching lines can be simple or elaborate – they give the quilt volume and character.

In short:

Patchwork is the design of the surface – quilting is the joining of the layers together.

A quilt's appeal lies in both the design of the top and the way it is quilted. The stitching lines make the difference between a flat patchwork piece and a vibrant, textured work of art.

Materials and tools

The basis for clean quilting

Werkzeuge:

  • Rollschneider, Schneidematte, Patchworklineal

  • Universalnadel Stärke 80–90

  • Reißfestes Garn (Polyester oder Baumwolle)

  • Sicherheitsnadeln oder Sprühkleber zum Fixieren

  • Obertransportfuß oder Quiltfuß

  • Bügeleisen für glatte, saubere Übergänge

Quilting on the sewing machine

Tips for beginners

You don't need a special quilting machine – you can achieve great results with a normal household sewing machine!

Here's the best way to do it:
Start small: Practice first on small projects such as table runners or bags.

  • Work in sections: Roll or fold the quilt so that only the current area is under the needle.

  • Use the walking foot: This foot ensures that all layers are transported evenly.

  • Adjust sewing speed: Quilt slowly and evenly – this will keep the stitch length constant.

  • Longer stitches: A stitch length of 3.0–3.5 mm produces clean lines.

  • Wear quilting gloves: They provide a better grip when guiding the fabric.

  • Always start in the middle: This prevents wrinkles or distortions.

Pro tip: Use marking pens or chalk to transfer your quilt pattern onto the fabric. This will help you keep track and work symmetrically.

Popular quilting styles and techniques

There are many ways to design your quilt pattern. Each style has its own character – from simple to playful.

Straight stitch quilting
The classic quilting style. Straight, parallel lines create a modern and calming effect. Ideal for beginners and minimalist designs. You can space the lines evenly or irregularly for a more vibrant look.

Diagonal quilting
Diagonal lines create tension and movement. They are particularly popular in geometric patchwork patterns.

Canal quilts
Here, several lines are sewn close together – this creates a three-dimensional, textured surface. Especially beautiful on bags or cushions.

Free-motion quilting
In free-motion quilting, you guide the fabric manually while the feed dogs are disengaged. This creates flowing, unique lines and patterns – from spirals to leaves or waves. It takes practice, but is incredibly creative and relaxing.

decorative stitch quilting
If your sewing machine has decorative stitches, you can use them specifically for quilting – e.g. for children's quilts, edge embellishments or themed projects.

Combination quilts
Many quilters combine different styles – for example, straight lines in the border area and free-motion patterns in the center. This makes the quilt look interesting and vibrant.

Have fun quilting and experimenting!
